>> Shanghai: Officials from the port's developer said this month, Shanghai’s Yangshan Deep-water Port may handle 12.3 million TEUs of containers this year as trade volume rebounds. This is an increase of 21.7% year-on-year.
Once the construction of the fourth phase is completed the port will have an additional capacity of 4 million TEUs annually, said General Manager of Yangshan Tongsheng Port Construction Co., Wang Xuan. When fully operational by 2015, the port will have 10 kilometers of coastline with nearly 30 berths for container vessels.
Including terminals in the Waigaoqiao area and Baoshan District, the port accounts for about a third of the total throughput handled by Shanghai. Last year, Shanghai's container throughput totaled 29.05 million TEUs of which the Yangshan port handled 10.1 million TEUs. This year Shanghai may have a throughput up to 30 million TEUs, said Chen Xuyuan, President of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co, in April.
Together with the Waigaoqiao free trade zone and the Lujiazui financial hub, Lingang New Town, in Shanghai's South-East where the Yangshan port is situated, are expected to help cope with Shanghai's booming trade over the next 10 to 20 years.
